Aim and Purposes
In Psalm 78:1-8, we read the following:
1 My people, hear my teaching;
listen to the words of my mouth.
2 I will open my mouth with a parable;
I will utter hidden things, things from of old—
3 things we have heard and known,
things our ancestors have told us.
4 We will not hide them from their descendants;
we will tell the next generation
the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord,
his power, and the wonders he has done.
5 He decreed statutes for Jacob
and established the law in Israel,
which he commanded our ancestors
to teach their children,
6 so the next generation would know them,
even the children yet to be born,
and they in turn would tell their children.
7 Then they would put their trust in God
and would not forget his deeds
but would keep his commands.
8 They would not be like their ancestors—
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
whose hearts were not loyal to God,
whose spirits were not faithful to him.
This psalm reminds us that it is of utmost importance that we pass down to the next generation the “praiseworthy deeds of the LORD”. For the Israelites who first heard this, that would have been the great story of redemption, the Exodus. But for us Christians today, it would be the even greater story of redemption (which the Exodus points forward to), the gospel of Jesus Christ. We want them to know what God has done so that they might put their trust in him, and walk according to his ways.
That is the ultimate aim of our Sunday School. We don’t just want to teach Bible stories, we want to teach the Big Story of the Bible. We don’t just want to pass down “Christian values”, we want to pass down the Christian faith. We are not babysitting, but engaging in discipling. We want to partner with the primary disciple-makers of our kids, the parents, and support them as they aim to bring them up in the Lord.
At our Sunday School, we are divided into the 4 groups as follows:
Group 1 : Ages 3-4
Group 2 : Ages 5-6
Group 3 : Ages 7-9 (Primary 1 to 3)
Group 4 : Ages 10-12 (Primary 4 to 6)
The Sunday School currently meets in the newer wing of the church. All the children usually gather for a time of singing from 8.30 – 9 am in Conference Room 1, before breaking up to their respective classes from 9 -10 am. During the first Sunday of each month, when we take communion together, the children join together with the parents before going to their classes.
From 2019, Groups 1 and 2 will be doing the curriculum “Teaching Little Ones”, while Groups 3 and 4 will go through “The Gospel Project for Kids”. We hope to see you there!
(If your child is below the age of 3, we recommend going to the creche instead).
